This priory dates back at least 500 years. It was first renovated and opened as a small hotel in the mid-90s. Now under the present owner, Elisabeth Vedier, it is clear that great care is taken to provide the discerning traveller with a luxurious yet comfortable place to stay. She continues the work to preserve this marvellously ornate building, putting a shine to it, and adding lots of period furniture and a couple of contemporary comforts. Hotel, Dordogne

In a prominently high position within the village of Biron, this large fortress and old working monastery was owned by 14 generations of the Gontaut-Biron family. The south-west wall was once a part of the fortification of Biron, and is over 1 metre in thickness, dating back to the 12th Century. On becoming a priory, large Renaissance-style windows were added. Then in 1779, a new wing was built, forming the inviting courtyard you see as you come to the front of the hotel.

Care and precision has been put into the individuality of each room, and such attention to detail can be seen in the unique appearance of them all. A browse through our photos will help guests choose a favourite. All rooms are spacious and have 3 metre-high ceilings, sitting areas, tea and coffee making facilities, as well as bathrobes and hair-dryers. Nor has effort been spared on bedding and bed linen.

There is an also a self-catering apartment, allowing for a bit more independence in this lovely setting. It has satellite television, a DVD player, washing machine, and the kitchen includes stove, fridge and dishwasher.

Within an hour's drive of here, numerous attractions await visitors to the area: prehistoric caves, Romanesque churches and cloisters, fortified villages, and the delights of a trip alongside the Dordogne River. Le Prieuré du Château de Biron is also merely a few minutes' drives from the bastide towns of Monpazier, Villeréal and Montflaquin.

Restaurant:

The restaurant 'Auberge du Château' is just 30 metres from the hotel.
Sometimes in low season, a table d'hôte is offered in the dining room of the priory. This needs to be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

A Word From the Owner:

"After many years of living in the USA, I have chosen this very special place to realize a very old dream- opening a B&B. Since then, it has been my privilege and my great pleasure to welcome guests from all over the world. We strive to offer a memorable experience, while offering more of a private home experience in a comfortable and elegant setting with personalized service."

What We Say:

So many things impress, but perhaps most notable are the large rooms and generous space. No worries about swinging a cat: you could swing a tiger in here!

Customer Feedback:

"Our room couldn't have been more comfortable and enjoyed a glorious view towards Monflanquin - another local bastide town. The breakfasts are magnificent..."

"Even in August when the Dordogne is chock a block with tourists, it's an oasis of calm, with stunning views over the meadows; we ate our delicious breakfasts (fruit salad, warm croissants) al fresco and at night watched the meteor showers from the back garden- Biron is so tiny under its enormous chateau there is next to no light pollution. Altogether an enchanting stay!"

"Biron and the priory will always hold a special place in my heart."
