Château Longsard is an 18th-century château, which sits on the 87-mile 'Route du vin du Beaujolais' wine route that passes through all of the Beaujolais appellations. Equidistant between Mâcon and Lyon, it is positioned amongst a listed garden and vineyards. These nearby vineyards offer opportunities for walking, hiking and cycling, whilst the château has its own orchard and bee hives that yield the ingredients for the home-made honey and organic jams served at breakfast. Hotel Chateau de Longsard

The hosts are the Count and Countess Olivier du Mesnil du Buisson, an Anglo-French couple who love to welcome guests to their home. And "home" is a key word here: the entrance hall, dining room and salon are as grand as befits a French château yet pleasantly homely as well.

There are various room options, divided between the château itself and the traditional coach house. The ground, first and second floors of the château have rooms designed for 2 or 3 people, whilst the coach house houses the suites, which are suitable for 4 or 5. All have an en-suite bathroom with bath or shower, and each bedroom has its own character; they have been carefully decorated with personal objects, antiques, and paintings or prints. Rooms look out over either the rose garden or the topiary, whose yew trees have been shaped into the form of a chess board.

As guests enter the courtyard, they see the two impressive Cedar of Lebanon trees, one of which is 300 years old. Out on the lime tree-lined terrace, guests can partake in the traditional French ballgame of boules, and enjoy a pre-dinner glass of Beaujolais wine.

Restaurant:

Fine dining is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays in the chateau's elegant dining room (reservations required at booking), with entrée, main course, a selection of cheeses, dessert and Beaujolais wine for 38 euros per head. Before eating, guests may wish to take a drink in the drawing room or out on the terrace, whilst afterwards, they can retire for a coffee, tea or maybe a Marc du Beaujolais spirit. For other days, the hotel will be happy to recommend on of the excellent restaurants in the area.

What We Say:

A top choice for wine aficionados, its location along the celebrated Beaujolais wine route puts it in a prime position. The grounds are notable for their styled features, and this a delightful setting to explore. In between the Burgundy commune of Mâcon and the Rhône-Alpes city of Lyon, Château Longsard is close to some of France's most popular destinations to visit.

From the Guestbook:

"We liked the setting of the old, ancient castle in the middle of the country side. The big rooms the price-quality ratio, breakfast in the common breakfast room with exceptional croissants and home-made jams."

"My wife and I and two friends had the pleasure of staying with Olivier and Alexandra for two nights in early October. This chateau had everything that we had hoped for, a real Count and Countess as hosts offering genuine hospitality, authentic heritage character that our hosts have been restoring with great taste, wonderful large and old-world rooms filled with character furnishings, a splendid breakfast and ample grounds that feature a century-old chess game in yews and a fountain used for target practice when the chateau was occupied by troops during WW2. We had the ultimate pleasure of looking after the chateau one evening, dining on French cheeses, breads and sausage in the company of the resident dogs and cat. One of the biggest Lebanon cedars I have ever seen greets you to the chateau."

"I absolutely loved my stay here in the beaujolais countryside! My goals on this trip were to tour the countryside, take in the wine experience, and to relax! If you are looking for a wonderful relaxing trip and are an avid lover of wine, this is a destination for you. The food was wonderful and the Count and Countess were very pleasant. I really enjoyed the simplicity of this trip. Also, the wine excursions I had planned were very unique...............not at all commercialized."
