The Manoir du Lys is a labour of love for the Quinton family, with six of them involved in the running of this 30-bedroom friendly hotel next to the Andaine forest in lower Normandy. It is an excellent choice for food lovers, with its restaurant having had a Michelin star for ten years now. Hotel Manoir du Lys

Formerly an old hunting lodge, the Quinton family opened the hotel in 1984, with 11 uniquely-decorated rooms in the original main building. A new wing was added in 1991 with 12 bright and spacious rooms overlooking the rich landscape of the park and forest. 7 stylishly-furnished wooden bungalows were subsequently built at the turn of the new century.

Le Manoir du Lys's growth over the years has not been at the expense of attention to detail, and indeed individual details in the guest rooms are a part of what merits inclusion in Little Hotels. Some have a classical décor. Others have bright colours, but tastefully done. Rooms are naturally well-lit and each is equipped with TV, telephone, hair-dryer and mini-bar. Some rooms have terraces and views over the orchard, where deer and stags are often seen. As for the bungalows, they have lounge, terrace and a large bathroom, ideal for couples and families. These seven lodges, built on 'stilts', are each named after a variety of local autumn plants, and give guests a great experience of being in the heart of the surrounding nature.

Franck Quinton is the head chef. Having worked as a sous-chef at a renowned large hotel restaurant in Paris, he returned to the family manor 15 years ago and earned the restaurant the Michelin star shortly after. The food is therefore a delight, and furthermore his expertise in the enormous range of mushrooms to be found in the nearby forest has led to this becoming a staple ingredient of his cuisine.

For those wishing to relax or take some exercise, there is both an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool, plus a tennis court. Several activity packages are also organised, and these unsurprisingly centre around gastronomy. For instance, guests can take cookery courses with Franck, learning sauces, improvised recipes and desserts. There are also mushroom weekends in late autumn, involving picking in the Andaine forest with a mycologist, as well as an exquisite 'Made in Normandy' picnic package once a month from May to September.

Two bedrooms at Manoir du Lys are suited to handicapped guests.

What We Say:

A fine choice for lovers of nature and food. The Quintons have entirely dedicated themselves to their lovely hotel.

From the Guestbook:

"Discreet service, and scrumptious fare in its Michelin-starred restaurant. The parkland setting is redolent of another, more elegant age."

"Altogether, a very pleasant stay made even better by a very courteous, baby friendly and helpful staff and a particularly good for its price eating experience."
