In the tradition of Basque farms, Auberge Ostapé is comprised of five villas on a 45-hectare plot of land in the heart of the green hills of the Basque Country, and features whitewashed lime-plastered walls, red shutters and exposed stones throughout. The auberge has 22 suites (Junior, Standard, Luxury and Prestige). Hotel, Bidarray, Navarre

The restored farmhouse was constructed in 1665 and antique furnishings abound throughout. Dinner is served out on the terrace or in the cosy dining room with its fireplace. The owners have tried to combine this old-style comfortable way of living with facilities that you'd expect to see in a four-star hotel. This means free wi-fi access, a telephone, safe and hairdryer, minibar and tea and coffee-making facilities in suites, and an abundance of activities on offer, such as a heated swimming pool, sauna, Moroccan-style hammam and fitness room, or even a game of pelota (a traditional Basque sport). This is also the case in the surrounding area, with hot-air ballooning, rafting, canyoning and quadding all possibilities.

The local area is also delightful to explore: purple rocky mountains, undulating green hills with white sheep scattered about, a winding stream, small stone bridge and Roman church made from pink sandstone, as well as paths through the fields on which to take a stroll.

Suites range from 45m2 to 91m2 (ie from big to huge!) and each has its own entrance and grand fireplace. They are each decorated differently and have either a terrace or a garden-level balcony.

Restaurant:

Chef Cédric Roubin, his three cooks and his pastry chef enjoy crafting a menu representing Basque culinary tradition, blending local produce. The menus are both well-thought out and extensive, and there is a huge wine list (60 to choose from).

As a sample, there is tuna from St. Jean de Luz, Banca trouts, Aldudes pork, vegetables and herbs, ewe cheese, and fruits from the auberge's own orchard.

Breakfast takes place in the large restaurant or out on the sunlit terrace and includes Basque cakes, vanilla custard with caramel sauce, rice pudding, fruit salad, lemon cakes and home made chocolate cakes.

A Word From the Owner:

"There are no ecological worries- no cars are allowed around the land; only golf buggies circulate. There are woods and an orchard, and gardens with such species as oaks, wild cherry trees, birches, chestnut, medlar and walnut trees, as well as camellias, holly, wild rose bushes, hydrangeas and tulips".

What We Say:

The sense of space provided by 45 hectares and the dispersed villas is something to be savoured. One of our favourite features was the golf buggies that you can drive to get to your suite. A lot of thought has gone into the menus too, with such a variety of them.

From the Guestbook:

"Probably the nicest place we've stayed in, top class luxury at affordable prices. the scenery and solitude was amazing. we will be back!”

“We liked the comfortable spacious suite in the most idyllic, tranquil, rural position, good food and friendly staff. The use of a personal golf buggy to get to and from the main hotel building was an enjoyable bonus". James, Edenbridge

“It's a fabulous hotel to relax at. Absolute tranquility. Excellent cuisine". Miren, San Sebastian
