Luberon is the massif which straddles the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Vaucluse, renowned for its limestone hills and 'perched villages', clinging to the hilltops. Hotel in Provence Le Mas des Romarins is a small country hotel right at the heart of this area, and what is more, near Gordes, adjudged to be one of the most beautiful villages of France, with astonishing views.

The hotel itself is just across the hill from the village, no more than a ten-minute walk away. It is a 19th century house which has been renovated from top to toe, bringing out the fullness of its character yet bringing it fully into the 21st century. The terraced gardens are a special feature, complete with a typical 'borie', a traditional stone-built shepherds hut. The terraces, stone walls, steps and shrubs make up a labyrinth of secret gardens for guests to enjoy. This is equally a place to enjoy breakfast, quiet drink as the sun goes down or indeed an energising swim in the 10 metre pool.

There is a choice of ground floor and first floor rooms in either the mas itself or the former workshop. Each room is individually furnished in a soft, warm cottagey style, exemplified by exposed stone feature walls and pretty bed-covers and curtains. The workshop rooms have the edge on space, but the mas rooms have the best views, including unique views of the village of Gordes.

There is a free car park, pretty useful as Gordes is a village created long before the advent of the motor car so other parking spaces can be elusive. Its an easy stroll into the village where it is still possible to sample a traditional Provençal market. Go further afield and you can explore the area by Abbaye de Sénaque (still a working abbey), set amid fragrant lavender fields, or the 'Village of the Bories'- stone dwellings dating back 3000 years, and a classified national monument.

Restaurant:

On Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Provençal and Mediterranean food is served, prepared by the Provence-born chef. The wine list offers a selection of prestigious Alpilles and acclaimed AOC of Provence wines. A traditional French breakfast including bread, cheese and pastries is included in the room price. Lunch is also available, with salads, pastas, omelettes, cheeses and desserts featuring on the set menu. For days when the evening meal isn't served, the hotel will provide restaurant recommendations in Gordes.

What We Say:

A classic Provence house in a classic Provence setting.

From the Guestbook:

"We stayed for a night in a room in the 'workshop'. The room was lovely, with nice touches such as bathrobes, an amazing shower and a pretty well-stocked mini bar."

"The view from the terrace is gorgeous, and it's only a short walk into the village."

"The bathroom was beautiful, with a heavenly shower. Sitting on the patio before dinner and watching the light change over Gordes as the sun went down was one of the best experiences of our trip."

"The Hotel is one of the best we have ever stayed in, from the cleanliness, accommodation and service to the wonderful view! We were looked after by Dominique who is possibly the most polite Hotel Manager we have ever come across. We ate at the hotel on the first two nights and the food was brilliant along with the unfussy, friendly service, nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is in a wonderful position and the short walk to the village makes it an ideal spot. We are planning on staying here again next year."
