Nine of the eleven guest rooms are in the understated yet beautiful Château
d’Aubeterre, the "modern" part
of the hotel, being only about 130 years old. The history of Le Clos des Tourelles
stretches back to to the 11th century, when the fortified Vellaufant Tower was
constructed in 1080. Other buildings, from the 13th and 15th centuries, surround
a 'Cour d'Honneur' courtyard. One of these is particularly lovely, a typical
piece of French vernacular with its upper-floor balustrades and pyramidal tower.
This is all within 4 hectares of tree-filled parkland gardens with
various rare species.
Adding to the tranquillity that goes with the hotel's grounds, it is difficult not to be seduced by the inviting jacuzzi, and maybe the swimming pool (open from June to September). Guest rooms look out over the garden and lake or the courtyard. In the tower, guests can enjoy the château's own wines in the 'caveau', Le Clos des Tourelles's arched wine cellar (the hotel is situated on the Burgundy wine route and grows Pinot Noir, Gamay and Chardonnay varieties in it's nearby vineyards). This is found in the Vellaufant Tower, which also houses a mediaeval reception and dining room with a grandiose chimney. Furthermore, a trip can be taken to the hotel's vineyard and to the winery, where the whole production process can be seen, from pressing and fermentation, to maturation, bottling and labelling.
There is both a small living room with a TV, and a drawing room with a piano, where guests often like to enjoy a glass of wine. Besides the dining room, breakfast can be taken on the veranda or the terrace when the weather is suitable.
